What is social selling?

Social selling is the practice of building familiarity with potential buyers through public participation, commenting, posting, and useful replies, so that outreach lands with someone who already recognises your name.

Also called: LinkedIn social selling, warm outreach.

It is best understood as the opposite of cold outreach rather than a variant of it. The cold version asks a stranger for time on the first contact. The social version spends weeks being visible and useful first, so the eventual message arrives from a familiar name.

The mechanics are unglamorous: identify the people worth knowing, read what they post, reply with something that adds to it, and do that consistently. Most of the work happens in other people’s comments rather than in your own feed.

What separates it from automation is that the volume stays human. Tools that blast connection requests and templated messages get accounts restricted and produce nothing, because the entire value was in the familiarity that volume destroys.

Timing runs on signals rather than on a schedule. Someone who has engaged with your posts more than once, replied to a comment you left, or turned up in your notifications repeatedly is telling you the outreach window is open. A message sent on the third signal lands very differently from the same message sent to a name on a list.

Posting and commenting are the same motion pointed in different directions. Commenting puts you in front of people you chose; posting lets the same people find you and warms the whole list at once. Sellers who only comment stay invisible between conversations, and sellers who only post never choose who sees them.

It is slower to start and cheaper to sustain than outbound. The pipeline takes months to appear and then keeps producing without the per-message cost, which is the opposite shape to a cold campaign.

Common questions.

Is social selling just commenting on posts?

Commenting is the largest part of it, but the sequence matters: a targeted list of people worth knowing, consistent useful replies, then outreach only once there are signals of interest.

Can social selling be automated?

The finding and drafting can be. The sending should not be. Automated comments and DMs are exactly the behaviour that gets LinkedIn accounts restricted, so Depost AI drafts replies and messages and leaves the sending to you.
