How many connections can you have on LinkedIn?

At the cap, two things change. Follow becomes the default button on your profile, so new visitors follow you rather than request a connection. And you can no longer send or accept invitations until you remove enough connections to get back under the limit, which makes every remaining slot a decision rather than a formality.

This is a different limit from the one on sending invitations, and the two get confused constantly. The request limit is a rate: how many invitations you send in a week, enforced without a published number. This one is a total: how many people you can be connected to at once, published and fixed. An account can be nowhere near 30,000 and still be blocked from inviting anyone.

The important half is the part that is not capped. Followers are unlimited, and following is one-directional, so somebody who follows you sees your posts without occupying a slot. An account with 30,000 connections and 90,000 followers is reaching 120,000 people, and only the first number has a ceiling.

That makes the cap much less alarming than it sounds, provided you notice early what your connections are for. If they are a genuine network you can call on, 30,000 was never the target. If they are an audience for what you publish, followers do the same work with no ceiling, and the switch to Follow as the default is doing you a favor.

The accounts that hit the cap are usually creators who spent years accepting every request. The useful move well before that point is to stop treating connection count as the growth metric, because it is the one number on LinkedIn that stops going up.
