Impressions vs reach: what is the difference?

Impressions count how many times a post was displayed, while reach counts how many distinct people saw it, so one person scrolling past a post three times produces three impressions but one unit of reach.

Also called: LinkedIn impressions meaning, difference between reach and impressions.

Impressions will always be the larger number. The gap between the two tells you something specific: a wide gap means the same audience is seeing you repeatedly, and a narrow one means you are reaching new people.

Neither is a goal on its own. Both measure exposure, not persuasion, and a post can collect a great deal of both while changing nobody’s mind. They are most useful as the denominator for something else, which is why engagement rate divides by impressions rather than standing alone.

On LinkedIn specifically, impressions are the number surfaced most prominently, which makes it easy to mistake a well-distributed post for an effective one. Check what happened underneath it before drawing conclusions.

Repeat exposure is not wasted, either. People need to see a name several times before they remember it, so a narrow gap is good for discovery and a wide one is good for recall. They are different jobs, not better and worse.

Common questions.

Should I optimise for impressions?

Not directly. Impressions follow from posts people engage with, so optimising for the thing you want readers to do tends to raise impressions anyway, while chasing impressions on their own leads to bait.

How far back does LinkedIn show my impressions?

LinkedIn’s own analytics show a limited recent window. Depost AI syncs the full published history and follower history of the account you connect, so trends can be measured across everything you have posted.
