# What is dwell time?

**Dwell time:** Dwell time is how long a reader spends on a post before scrolling on, used as a ranking signal because it measures actual attention rather than the deliberate act of clicking a button. LinkedIn measures it from the moment at least half the post is on screen, and reports none of it to the person who wrote the post.

Also called: time spent on post, attention signal, read time.

Reactions and comments are easy to fake and easy to solicit. Attention is not. A reader who stops for fifteen seconds has told the ranking system something more honest than one who tapped a reaction in half a second, which is why time on post carries real weight.

This explains a lot of otherwise puzzling format behavior. Carousels perform well because every swipe extends the time spent. Longer text posts with a "see more" cut perform well when the opening earns the expansion, because expanding is itself a signal. Video holds attention when it is watched and wastes it when it is not.

The practical consequence is that the opening lines are doing more work than the rest of the post combined. They decide whether a reader stops at all, and a post nobody stops for never gets the distribution that would let anyone else see it.

It also means padding is actively harmful. Length only helps when people read it; a post stretched to look substantial gets abandoned partway, which reads worse than a short post finished.

**6.6%** average engagement on carousel posts, the platform’s highest-performing format (source: Benchmarks, 2026).

## In Depost AI

The Graphic Generator designs the carousel or infographic with the post rather than after it, which is the practical way to earn attention rather than ask for it. The Post Generator drafts the opening lines from patterns that held attention on your own account, not from a generic hook template.

## Questions people ask

### Can I see dwell time in LinkedIn analytics?

Not directly. LinkedIn does not publish a dwell time figure, so it has to be inferred from what the platform does surface: impressions relative to engagement, and how formats perform against each other on your own account.

### Do longer posts get more reach because of dwell time?

Only when they are read. Length helps if the writing holds people and hurts if it does not, so padding a post to increase time on screen produces the opposite of what it intends.
