# What is brand memory?

**Brand memory:** Brand memory is the stored context an AI content tool reads before it writes for a particular person or company: their positioning, their voice, what they have published and how it performed, the reference material they have saved, and the preferences they have stated, kept across sessions instead of being re-entered with every prompt.

Also called: content memory, AI brand context, brand knowledge base, AI memory for content.

The problem it solves is the blank prompt. A general assistant knows nothing about you at the start of each conversation, so every request has to carry its own briefing: who you are, who you write for, what you sound like, what you have already said. People shorten that briefing over time, and the output gets more generic as they do.

A memory moves the briefing out of the prompt and into the system. Some of it is stated once and confirmed, such as positioning, audience, and content pillars. Some of it is observed rather than stated: the published record, which posts outperformed, which hooks and formats the audience actually rewarded. Some of it is deliberately added, such as product documents, case studies, call notes, and posts saved as reference.

The observed part is what separates a memory from a settings page. A voice described in a questionnaire is a guess; a voice derived from a hundred published posts is evidence, and it can be refreshed as the writing changes. The same holds for performance: a tool that knows which of your posts worked can rank the next idea against that record rather than against a global average.

Two properties decide whether a memory is trustworthy. It has to be inspectable, so you can see what was retrieved for a given answer and correct what is wrong. And it has to be scoped, so that when one account holds several people or clients, one person’s memory never leaks into another’s drafts.

## In Depost AI

Depost AI keeps one brand memory per brand: the brief confirmed at onboarding, a voice learned from your posts and refreshed weekly, every published post with its numbers, your bookmarks and viral posts from your niche, what you have said in chat, and a knowledge base you fill with documents, links, and notes. Every agent reads it before it works, and a Sources panel shows exactly what each answer used.

## Questions people ask

### How is brand memory different from a brand voice?

Voice is one part of it. Brand memory also holds the positioning, the published record and its performance, saved reference material, and stated preferences. Voice answers how something should sound; memory answers what it should say and what it should draw on.

### Does an AI need a knowledge base to have brand memory?

A knowledge base is the part you fill by hand: documents, links, call notes, research. It matters most when you write about your own product or method, because it is what stops a draft being written from general knowledge. The rest of the memory, such as voice and performance, can be derived from what you have already published.

### Can I see what the memory was used for?

You should be able to. In Depost AI, an answer grounded in your material carries a Sources panel showing what was retrieved, grouped by where it came from, so a claim can be traced back to a post, a bookmark, or a document before you publish it.
